Project summary

  • Facts

Mölnlycke is a global manufacturer of healthcare products and solutions, known especially for its innovative wound care and surgical products. In recent years, Mölnlycke has enhanced its production facilities’ sterilisation processes to ensure safety, environmental sustainability and high quality. Rejlers has supported the company by providing extensive expertise in EHS, process and HVAC solutions.

  • What we did

We managed the environmental permit required for the project and carried out the process safety analyses (HAZOP and ATEX). In addition, we were responsible for the design of customised vacuum chambers and their piping systems. Over several years of partnership, Rejlers has also supported Mölnlycke in HVAC and building automation design.

  • Highlights

“Rejlers has excelled in collaborative, partnership-based working and in advancing our shared objectives. They have taken strong ownership of the assignment and actively contributed high-level professional expertise to the project.” Tomi Partanen, EHS Coordinator, Mölnlycke

At Mölnlycke’s factory in Mikkeli, Finland, which specialises in the manufacture of wound care products, the sterilisation facility needed to be expanded. The aim of the expansion was to secure production capacity so that the growing product volume can be sterilised efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner.

The sterilisation process uses ethylene oxide, a highly flammable and environmentally harmful substance. Ensuring safety was therefore one of the project’s key focus areas. The renewed process delivers major environmental benefits, including reduced use of ethylene oxide gas, more efficient treatment and control of emissions, and improved energy efficiency.

The project required an environmental permit, which Rejlers successfully obtained. This marked the beginning of a long-term collaboration that continues today.

Rejlers has strong expertise in managing demanding processes and environmental permit procedures. We have been particularly pleased with their environmental permit and safety know-how, says Tomi Partanen, EHS Coordinator at Mölnlycke.

HAZOP and ATEX expertise supporting overall safety

The HAZOP and ATEX analyses carried out by Rejlers ensure that the sterilisation process meets all safety requirements and legal obligations, and that the associated risks are properly identified and controlled. The collaboration enables a compliant, safe and reliable sterilisation process that supports Mölnlycke’s high production quality.

– Thanks to our broad expertise, we’ve been able to assess the process from multiple perspectives and support the customer comprehensively in ensuring safety, says Pauliina Kauppila, Head of EHS at Rejlers.

In addition to its EHS expertise, Rejlers has been responsible for designing the vacuum chambers used in the sterilisation process, as well as the related piping systems. The work included both preliminary and detailed design, covering everything from the vacuum chambers to the connection pipelines and pipe bridges linking different parts of the process.

– Designing the vacuum chambers was exceptionally challenging, as no ready-made standard solution existed and a fully customised design was required. Our multidisciplinary team made it possible to manage the overall scope and deliver a safe outcome, explains Ville Kerttula, who leads Piping & Layout team at Rejlers.

Over several years of partnership, Rejlers has also supported Mölnlycke in HVAC and building automation design, particularly in cleanroom HVAC solutions and in conducting energy audits and measurement services.

Rejlers has excelled in collaborative, partnership-based working and in advancing our shared objectives. They have taken strong ownership of the assignment and actively contributed high-level professional expertise to the project. The cooperation has gone smoothly, and challenges have been solved from multiple perspectives, Partanen concludes.
