About the project

  • Client

    Svenska kraftnät

  • Objective

To ensure that the Degerträsk transmission substation meets all applicable standards and requirements for functionality, safety and availability, enabling its connection to the national grid and the supply of electricity to large-scale industrial developments.

  • Rejlers role

Rejlers acts as the owner’s representative for Svenska kraftnät. The assignment includes technical advisory, review and requirements management, as well as functional verification.

A vital hub in a rapidly evolving energy system

Degerträsk is more than just a substation – it is a strategic hub within one of Sweden’s most important infrastructure systems. It will be connected to Messaure, which also links to the Aurora Line – the new cross-border power connection between Finland and Sweden. The substation will also connect to Svartbyn, home to one of the receiving stations for Markbygden, Sweden’s largest onshore wind farm.

The electricity produced and distributed in northern Sweden will supply several major facilities, including fossil-free steel production in Boden and new industrial sites in Luleå, where the existing coke plant will be phased out. The project is therefore a foundation of Sweden’s energy transition and a prerequisite for transforming industry in practice.

Rejlers is responsible for the project and contributes specialist expertise in regulatory requirements and system integration. The assignment covers the full scope: from requirements review and system verification to support in complex technical decisions directly influencing commissioning capability. Acting as an extension of Svenska kraftnät, we serve as on-site decision-makers and quality assurers – ensuring that the project is delivered correctly and efficiently.

Once the Degerträsk substation is commissioned, it will deliver power for fossil-free steel production – a significant step for both the energy transition and the transformation of industry. The station will fully comply with all functional, safety and availability requirements for connection to the transmission grid, ensuring long-term operational performance. Degerträsk will therefore become a crucial link in northern Sweden’s power supply – a clear example of how expertise and collaboration can drive large and complex infrastructure projects forward.

Through our role in the Degerträsk project, we demonstrate that Rejlers is more than a consulting partner – we are a key player in Sweden’s energy transition. Our technical competence and ability to step into the customer’s shoes strengthen our relevance at a decisive moment for Swedish industry.
