World-class infrastructure project – Rejlers’ role in the redevelopment of Slussen

Since 2013, Rejlers has been a key player in one of Sweden’s most extensive and complex infrastructure projects – the redevelopment of Slussen in Stockholm. Commissioned by the City of Stockholm, Rejlers, together with several other engineering consultancies, has been responsible for design and construction documentation within electrical systems, telecommunications, traffic management, as well as HVAC and sprinkler systems.

About the project

  • Client

    City of Stockholm

  • Challenge

To modernise and climate-adapt Slussen with a focus on improved traffic solutions, increased flood management capacity, and sustainable urban development.

  • Rejlers role

Rejlers has been part of a coordinated consultancy group responsible for design and construction documentation across several technical disciplines. In the later phases of the project, we have once again increased our involvement to finalise as-built documentation and support contractors during the construction phase.

A long-term collaboration with broad technical expertise

Rejlers has been part of the consultancy group together with ELU Konsult, Tikab, Tyréns, Structor, and White. The collaboration has been characterised by stability and continuity, with many key individuals remaining since the project began. The design of the major structures at Slussen is largely completed, but the project is still ongoing. Rejlers is currently responsible for finalising as-built documentation and ensuring delivery during the construction phase, in close cooperation with contractors.

The Golden Bridge – a visible milestone

When the Golden Bridge was put in place, it became clear to all of Stockholm how the project had taken shape – a symbolic moment marking the transition from planning to reality. The final major construction phase began in autumn 2024, and the entire traffic system is expected to be completed in 2027.

Construction phase marked by high pace and digital excellence

During the construction phase, Rejlers has played a supportive and solution-oriented role towards the contractors. Unlike the more structured design phase, this stage has been characterised by a high pace, quick decision-making, and close dialogue on technical solutions, adjustments, and construction drawings.

Another key factor has been the project’s digital approach. All disciplines have worked within a shared 3D model at a 1:1 scale, which has been used directly on site. The model has been crucial for coordination and quality assurance but has also placed high demands on expertise in digital delivery, security, and interface management.

At its core, an environmental project

The redevelopment of Slussen is not only about traffic and urban development – it is also an important environmental and sustainability project. The goal is to reduce the risk of flooding in Lake Mälaren by increasing discharge capacity, while also preventing the intrusion of saltwater.

Continuity, collaboration and lessons learned

The project has been successful from a consultancy perspective, largely thanks to the close collaboration within the coordinated consultancy group. Over time, a humble and solution-oriented culture has developed – combining technical expertise with trust and effective coordination.

We have learned many lessons, not least the importance of the people behind the technology. The Slussen project clearly demonstrates how stable teams, digital ways of working, and strong collaboration skills are crucial to succeeding in projects of this scale and complexity.
