Rejlers receives another vote of confidence from SSAB in Luleå

Rejlers has landed yet another major contract for the steel company SSAB, which is based in Luleå. The contract covers electrical systems design for the new control system, which regulates gas processing at the coke plant, and the new switchgear. Rejlers will also be responsible for commissioning.
“We go back a long way together and we are thrilled to have been given yet another vote of confidence to lead one of SSAB's major projects over the coming years,” says Hans Nilsson, project manager at Rejlers Industry in Luleå.
Traditional steel manufacturing processes use coke to produce pig iron, and in the coke plant, gases are extracted which are used to supply thermal power plants with energy. Rejlers is now helping SSAB to upgrade and modernise gas treatment at the coke plant in Luleå. The project involves the electrical design of a new control system and switchgear, and responsibility for maintaining a high level of quality when the new systems are commissioned in two years' time. Rejlers has previously carried out numerous major assignments for SSAB, including the conversion of blast furnaces and continuous casting.
As part of the development and renewal of steel production, SSAB is developing a completely fossil-free process for steel manufacturing. A partnership has been established with LKAB (Europe's largest iron ore producer) and Vattenfall (one of Europe's largest electricity generators), which launched the HYBRIT initiative. The idea behind HYBRIT is to replace coal and coke, which are traditionally used in ore-based steel making, with hydrogen. The HYBRIT project is now under way and the new technology is expected to be ready by 2035.
