Rejlers wins contract for major railway project in Finland

Rejlers has signed a contract with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA) for the improvement of the Kouvola–Kotka/Hamina railway, one of the most important cargo railway lines in Finland. Rejlers will provide services related to the construction contracting, supervision and design of the railway project.

The Kouvola–Kotka/Hamina stretch is one of the most important, if not the most important, cargo railway lines in Finland.

- There has been much discussion of the health and competitiveness of the Finnish export industry. The ports of Hamina and Kotka are important to Finland, and improving this section of the railway network will improve Finland’s competitiveness, says Project Manager Miia Kari of the FTIA.

The Kouvola–Kotka/Hamina railway was originally built on soft soil, and the heavy cargo traffic has steadily degraded the tracks, which are now in poor condition. The renovation project will provide the tracks with new superstructure and switches, along with replacing and renovating the required tunnels and bridges. In addition to the renovation, the project includes development and safety device subprojects. Miia Kari notes that the competition for the developer consultant was tight, but Rejlers had assembled the best team.

- The railway is heavily trafficked and has many single-track sections, so precise planning and communication with stakeholders is of the utmost importance. Rejlers experts were a good fit for the specialised needs of this project, says Miia Kari.

Replacing the signal boxes that ensure the safety of train traffic on this section of railway is a major part of the project, and the implementation will be one of a kind in the Finnish railway network.

- The signal boxes used on this railway section will be equipped with European train control systems that have not yet seen commercial use in Finland. The signal box supplied for the project will be fitted with test equipment that should provide real-time train location data to the system, says Project Manager Tommi Mäkelä of Rejlers.

According to Mäkelä, this approach will provide valuable experience for future signal box procurement, and this project will launch a nation-wide train control system update in Finland.
